Peak Drive
Just a few kilometres south of Cape Town on the Atlantic Coast, cut into the
cliffs around the base of the imposing 2000ft high Chapman’s Peak is
one of the world’s most spectacular scenic drives. The road, marking
the line at which the sedimentary Table Mountain sandstone has been laid on
a base of Cape granite, slices its way through brilliantly coloured layers
of red, orange and yellow silt and dark lines of manganese.
Numerous lookout points offer incomparable views across the sweep of Hout Bay to the 1000ft high Sentinel which looms alongside the busy small harbour, and, to the south, over the beautiful unspoilt sands of Long Beach which stretches from Noordhoek to Kommetjie.
The road is 10 kilometres long and was built between 1915 and 1922.
